This Year's Tax Due Dates? 2020 Filing & Extension Deadlines

Filing deadlines can sneak right up on you, and there’s nothing more aggrivating than having to pay a fine that could have been avoided in the first place.


Take a few minutes to save each relevant filing date to your google/outlook calendar, and stay one step ahead of the IRS.

IRS Mail Deadlines

The IRS considers your return “on time” if it’s in the mail before the end of business on your tax filing deadline day.


IRS E-File Deadlines

You can e-file your return before midnight on your tax deadline.

JANUARY 31, 2020

IRS Form W-2 Filing Deadline

If you have hired employees, you’ll need to fill out and file Form W-2 for each one of your employees. One W-2 must be submitted to the IRS. The other must be sent to the employee for their records. The deadline for both is January 31, 2020.

Form 1099-MISC Copy A filing deadline - Box 7

If you have hired independent contractors, the new January 31 filing deadline also applies to several types of 1099's. If you are filing a Form 1099-MISC and reporting amounts in Box 7.

Copy A must be filed with the IRS by January 31, 2020.




FEBRUARY 15, 2020

Form 1099-MISC Copy B filing deadline - Box 7

Copy B must be furnished to the contractor no later than February 15, 2020.




FEBRUARY 28, 2020

Form 1099-MISC Copy B filing deadline - Not in Box 7

If you don’t have amounts in Box 7 on your Form 1099, February 28 is the deadline for paper filing, or April 1 for electronic filing.

MARCH 16, 2020

S corporation and partnership tax returns due

March 16, 2020 is the deadline to file your S corporation tax return (Form 1120-S) or Partnership return (Form 1065). Any S corporations and Partnerships do not pay taxes on their income. That tax is paid on the individual incomes of the shareholders or partners.


If you are going to file for an extension the deadline is the same for S corp and partnership tax returns.

APRIL 15, 2020

When is the "BIG TAX DAY" Deadline?


The big “tax day” is April 15, 2020. All personal federal tax returns and corporate tax returns are due (before midnight by e-filing). It’s also when your first estimated tax payment is due.


Individual tax returns due

April 15, 2020 is the deadline to file Individual tax returns (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ). If your income is below $66,000 for the tax year, you can e-file for free using IRS Free File. If your income is above $66,000, you can use the IRS’ free, online fillable forms.


If you’re a sole proprietor filing Schedule C on your personal tax returns, the April 15, 2020 deadline applies to you. April 15th is also the deadline to file for an extension for your individual tax return.


Corporation tax returns

April 15, 2020 is the deadline to file Corporation tax returns (Form 1120).

April 15, 2020 is also the deadline to file for an extension to file your corporate tax return.
